POMA’s first media trip was a resounding success, offering outdoor writers and content creators a rich taste of Alabama’s storied Black Belt region from April 21-23. Held at the scenic Shenandoah Plantation in Union Springs, Alabama, the event was made possible through the generous support of the Alabama Black Belt Adventures Association, National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and RITON Optics.
Black Belt Strutter, Benelli USA, Clyde May's Alabama Style Whiskey, Otis Technology, Princeton Tec, Remington Ammunition and RLVNT Sunglasses all played a role in elevating the experience for both media guests, guides and hosts alike.
Media attendees included Alex Landeen of Athlon Outdoor Group; Jeremiah Doughty, the wild game chef behind From Field to Plate; Susan Delk of NWTF; and Drew Warden of Game & Fish magazine. Over the course of the three-day trip, they enjoyed classic spring turkey hunting in the pines of Alabama – with Landeen harvesting his first-ever gobbler.
Beyond the blind, the itinerary featured a quail buggy tour of the plantation, fishing in the property’s lake and an insightful presentation on the area’s field trial legacy.
Evenings showcased the region’s flavor. One highlight was dinner at John Hall Market, where attendees sampled The Cecil Quail – praised by Garden & Gun’s Eddie Nickens as the “best quail dish I’ve ever eaten.” The trip concluded with a gourmet wild game dinner by Chef Jeremiah Doughty, featuring wild boar chorizo stuffed mushrooms, a show-stopping bourbon-glazed turkey breast, creative side dishes and a surprise signature cocktail. Clyde May’s added to the experience by sending a representative to lead a bourbon and whiskey tasting that paired perfectly with the evening’s fare.
From meaningful connections to memorable meals and media-worthy moments, POMA’s first media trip set the bar high. More POMA-member exclusive adventures like this are already in the works – stay tuned.
