Braaap, Braaap, Braaap! The iconic onomatopoeic slang for the sound of a dirt bike’s two-stroke engine—hitting high RPMs. The unseen rapidly revving noise had been a constant for 30 minutes. It was late October, just before noon, and me and three friends were hunting ruffed grouse in the far northeastern part of Minnesota, just a few miles from Canada. There were at least three riders, as their amplified exhausts created a mechanical buzzing similar to a swarm of angry mosquitoes. The clamor faded in and out, as the motorbikes crisscrossed the backroads in every direction.
