Posted on: Jul 23, 2025

CAMP PERRY, Ohio – Bethany Shirley, 18, of Walton County 4-H, GA, was the overall champion of the 2025 CMP National Three-Position Sporter Air Rifle Championship – commanding a 10-point lead that took her into the finals and securing her a gold medal in the match.

For her win, Shirley received $1,000 from the CMP.

The 2025 CMP National Three-Position Sporter Air Rifle Championship, facilitated by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), was held June 19-21 at the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center in Port Clinton, Ohio. A group of 190 athletes traveled from across the country to attend the match – coming from as far as Hawaii. Competition included two days of qualifying scores from kneeling, prone and standing positions, followed by an eight-person elimination final on the second day to determine overall winners.

“We’re always excited to host this event to see who will come out on top,” said Katie Harrington, CMP’s air gun manager. “Bethany is an outstanding competitor, and it was really enjoyable to watch her maintain a solid process, even as the other talented athletes challenged her on the firing line.”

Claiming second behind Shirley and receiving $750 from the CMP was Alexadra Orr, 15, of Lafayette Gun Club, VA. Valeria Alvarado, 18, of North Brunswick High School, NC, rounded out the top three and received a $500 prize.

Alvarado’s excellent performance over the weekend helped her North Brunswick team earn the overall team win, with a score of 4,395-126X. Other team members were Lizeth Dominguez, Julian Seda and Alyssa Harris. The team, which also brought home the high scholastic team title, was led by coach George Williams and received $2,000 from the CMP.

A bonus reward for her hard work during the Nationals event added $1,000 to Alvarado’s earnings, as she was presented a CMP Scholarship as one of the top three graduating seniors of the match. Other earners were Brooklyn Zeigler, 18, of Daniel Boone High School, TN, who earned fourth overall, and Emma Allen, 18, of Appling County, GA, who claimed fifth.

Outside of competition, those who attended the CMP Sporter Nationals also had the opportunity to have a little fun off the range as the CMP hosted an outdoor pavilion party complete with cornhole, volleyball, a live DJ and food trucks. Thank you to all who attended!
