A Great Place to Catch Christmas Fish

Posted on: Nov 02, 2023

Branson is also well known for the great outdoor opportunities it offers during the Christmas season. The weather is usually not too cold. It is perfect for getting outdoors and taking in the beautiful Ozarks scenery from a boat on one of the three area lakes. It is one of the best times to catch big bass on the nationally known Table Rock Lake. You have a good chance of catching largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass all on the same day. They follow large groups of threadfin shad up the river arms. Spoons, drop shot rigs, and blade baits will do well on these suspended fish. Deep, rocky points and bluff ends are other options using ¼ ounce buck hair jigs from 10 to 35 feet deep. Bull Shoals Lake is a short drive from Branson and is well known for its winter crappie. You will find them congregated around brush piles and standing timber. When caught in winter’s cold water, they always taste better. So do the winter walleye that prowl these waters Lake Taneycomo runs through Branson and is internationally known for excellent trout fishing. Below the Table Rock Dam to the mouth of Fall Creek is fly fishing and artificial lures only. Phil Lilley, owner of Lilley’s Landing and Resort, says, “A lot of small rainbow fry are in the water. The bigger fish feed on them, so small to medium jerk baits work well. Reliable fly patterns include streamers, scuds, sow bugs, and other nymphs. Spin fishermen should also try spinners and marabou jigs.” From Fall Creek downstream to Powersite Dam, most trout fishermen use drift rigs with live night crawlers, red worms, or Berkley power baits. Twitch baits, small spinners and small crankbaits are also good. Rainbow and brown trout are both found in Lake Taneycomo waters.
