The Principal Accountant will work at and with RI Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) staff to oversee financial activities related to active grants and cooperative agreements with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and other partnering organizations and entities. This position will work in person (hybrid potential after 6 months) and be based at the RIDEM office in Providence.

The ideal candidate will be able to perform the following essential functions:
- To be responsible for the planning, organization, and management of the expenditures of U.S. Fish and Wildlife grants and cooperative agreements
- Work with the support and supervision of an experienced lead accountant with wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgement
- Plan, organize, assign, and review work of colleagues for accuracy and compliance
- Be responsible for the management, organization and operation of a large, advanced, and complex governmental accounting system
- Prepare various monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual reports and financial statements required by state and federal regulations
- Consult and confer with state and federal officials on expenditures and proposed expenditures to ensure compliant with grant budgets
What You'll Bring
- Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field and 3 years' related experience or equivalent combination.
- Experience with GAAP and fund accounting principles, practices, and regulations.
- Experience using automated accounting systems.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service grants and agreements
- Knowledge of the practices and methods for operating an advanced accounting system
- Ability to prepare and analyze financial statements
- Experience performing technical accounting and auditing duties
- Experience reviewing and ensuring compliance of grant financials for colleagues performing work on various grants
- Knowledge of the maintenance of accounting records
- Accuracy and attention to detail.
