Delta Waterfowl is The Duck Hunters Organization, a leading conservation group founded in 1911. We work to produce ducks through intensive management programs and conservation of breeding duck habitat. Delta conducts vital waterfowl research and promotes and protects the continuing tradition of waterfowl hunting in North America.

Delta’s international headquarters is located in Bismarck, North Dakota. Currently, our dedicated team consists of almost 100 employees, of which about half work within our headquarters office and the other half work remotely throughout the US and Canada. Our organization has experienced tremendous growth over the last few years and this is expected to continue. POSITION SUMMARY:

This position serves as a key member of our policy team in achieving a broad range of strategic objectives for ducks, duck habitat and duck hunters. This position will assist in providing direct strategic support on a number of priority policy issue areas primarily focused on state and local policy forums while providing assistance to further Delta’s national policy priorities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Track, analyze and engage on policy issues that impact ducks and duck hunters across the region.
  2. Assist with a wide range of priority policy items in coordination with other members of the policy team.
  3. Develop productive relationships with legislators and their staff, as well as agency personnel and partners to advance Delta’s policy priorities.
  4. Plan, coordinate and execute grassroots campaigns to achieve policy outcomes
  5. Develop and foster relationships with Delta volunteers and members to help achieve policy outcomes
  6. Advance hunting regulation changes that provide additional hunting opportunities
  7. Work towards removing barriers to point of entry for hunting as well as identify and defend hunting access in areas where threats may occur.
  8. Partner with Delta Waterfowl staff, volunteers and members to address emerging policy issues, as well as assisting with HunteR3 initiatives.
  9. Assist in Delta’s habitat conservation policy priorities.
  10. Actively participate in priority policy forums as identified.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in political science, wildlife biology, waterfowl ecology or other relevant field as well as two years of direct governmental affairs experience with a broad perspective including expertise including legislative, administrative and regulatory policy
  2. Passion for waterfowl and waterfowl hunting. The ability to translate Delta’s values and mission to policy makers is an essential attribute.
  3. An understanding of the issues impacting ducks, duck habitat and duck hunting.
  4. A commitment to excellent member and volunteer service. Delta’s work with our members and volunteers is a critical component of our policy work. The ideal candidate will both collaborate with and lead our members and volunteers in crucial policy efforts.
  5. Excellent communications skills are necessary to efficiently and clearly outline Delta’s policy priorities to decision makers.
  6. Ability to work independently and maintain focus on key priority tasks.
  7. Must work well with the general public and in a team environment.
  8. Ability to travel on occasions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Background in state or federal legislative work, grassroots campaigns or state fish and wildlife agencies.
  2. Previous professional experience with grassroots advocacy tools, legislative tracking software, etc.
