Freelance Opportunities

Posted: December 01, 2025

The editor of Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society’s Covers magazine is seeking freelance pitches for the following recurring departments: Shotguns, Purely Dogs, and Recipes. Writers with upland experience, a strong voice and a passion for conservation storytelling are encouraged to submit. Articles must be accompanied by images.

Below are brief descriptions and examples of past articles to guide your pitch.

Shotguns Column

This column explores upland-hunting shotguns, fit, function and field performance. Pieces should be educational, experience-driven and relevant to today’s grouse and woodcock hunter.

Past examples include:

  • A field review of modern lightweight 28-gauges for long days in mixed habitat
  • A gunsmith’s advice on maintaining older upland guns through heavy seasons
  • A hunter’s take on the best choke and load pairings for early-season woodcock

Purely Dogs Column

This column highlights the dogs that drive our upland traditions. Stories should center on working dogs, training lessons, field behavior and the bond between dog and hunter.

Past examples include:

  • A profile of a veteran grouse dog entering its final seasons and what it taught its owner
  • A young handler’s journey training her first pointing dog for the Northwoods
  • How scenting conditions change throughout the season and what dogs tell us

Recipes

Recipes should feature wild game, especially grouse or woodcock, and include approachable steps for home cooks. Seasonal ingredients, family traditions and creative upland flavors are encouraged.

Past examples include:

  • Seared woodcock with morel mushroom pan sauce
  • Grouse breast medallions over creamy polenta with sage
  • Upland pot pie using mixed forest vegetables

Please send:

  • A short summary of your proposed story
  • Details of your writing experience, and one sample of previous work
