Facebook is by far the world’s leading social network with more than 600 million users. If Facebook were a country, it would have the world’s third largest population. Therefore, it’s anybody’s guess as to why it’s considered a marketer’s paradise. Though it was conceptualized as a pure social network, it has undoubtedly taken the marketing world by storm in the last couple of years.

So, what is the mantra of success for Facebook marketing? As a marketer, what do’s and don’ts should you strictly follow on Facebook. I was amongst the early adopters of Facebook and I’ve followed it closely through last several years. Based on my experience, I hereby present to you the 7 rules of Marketing with Facebook.

#1 – Profile

Your Facebook profile is your identity in the world of social media. Businesses should consider various approaches on how they can improve their Facebook profiles in order to make it visually appearing and interesting. If your profile doesn’t strike a cord with the visitors, it’s a good indication that you need to get it in order sooner than later.

Nobody likes clumsy and boring profiles. Make sure your profile has interesting content coupled with a rich user interface. The profile is your first impression in Facebook world and first impressions are often the last impressions.

#2 – Links

As with other marketing channels, remember Facebook is a means – not an end. Make sure to include links to your website, blog and other social media profiles on your Facebook profile/ page. This helps bring in additional traffic to your website as well as provides valuable business information to visitors.

#3 – Page

If your Facebook profile is the heart, your business Facebook page is definitely the soul. Facebook pages are perhaps the best viral marketing tool available on any social network. Build an impressive page, encourage your friends to “like” it and spread the word around. Facebook Pages are a great way to tap into a new network and connect with prospect customers.

#4 – Interact

You may have a killer Facebook profile and Facebook page but if you do not interact with your fans, the battle is lost even before it begins. Businesses must remember that Facebook is after all a social network. Don’t be shy to initiate new conversations and join conversations to help your prospect and existing customers out.

#5 – Don’t Spam

Never spam your followers with unsolicited messages. It’s likely to bring disrepute to your business. Spamming your users with too many links to rapidly drive up your Facebook Page fan base is a bad idea. It may cost you dearly with Facebook labeling you as a spammer and bringing down your page.

#6 – Share

Your Facebook profile and page are wonderful places to share quality content from your blog, tips, articles, videos, and any other handy information. However, be careful with the type of photos that you share with your friends and fans – respect their privacy, it matters.

#7 – Don’t overdo it

Facebook is a powerful marketing monster so it’s easy to get lost and overdo things. However, an overdose of Facebook marketing can harm your business badly. Do not send friend requests and then harass them with information about your business or products. Initiate meaningful conversations and build long lasting relationships.
