Setting and Achieving Goals
Posted: September 05, 2023

All too often, the dreams in our heads remain just that-dreams. For whatever reason, they never escape the confines of our consciousness. Whether its the job that's always out of reach, the book you never got around to writing, or the hunting trip you've "planned" for decades, some things just aren't meant to be...or so we tell ourselves.
I have often felt the pressure of unrealized dreams mount in my life. Archery elk season just started here in Idaho, and with that new beginning comes the pressure of a lofty goal. This year, I will shoot a mature 6-point bull with my bow on public land. Nothing else will do. That's not an easy goal to accomplish with a full college class load, but it is my goal. Luckily for me, people have accomplished much more with less time.
Mike Duplan, firefighter and field editor at Western Hunter Magazine, is one of those individuals. Below is an article he wrote regarding goalsetting and determination that I found inspiring.
Goals matter.
They will be individual and they will be yours but to strive for something that holds meaning to you is an admirable journey and goal. Settling can be acceptable but more importantly, falling short only to rally and try again for that goal might be far more rewarding when you look back on your own goal quest. There are no words that are more inspirational for this goal setting than those of the revered President Theodore Roosevelt. They have been printed here in Western Hunter before but deserve a read again. I and many others hold this passage in high regard and consider it almost like a mantra for life and success.
