The patch for Internet Explorer addresses known security bugs, including one that allows someone to take over a PC via IE 6 or 7 using malicious Web pages.
One flaw that isn't fixed in the IE patch affects users of Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003. This vulnerability allows a malicious site to use VBScript to get to Windows Help files through IE. Thankfully, there's a warning sign -- a potential attack of this kind would display a pop up box that instructs you to press the F1 key. If you don't press F1, the attack can't be implemented.
Along with the browser fixes, there are also important security patches for Movie Maker and Excel.
