[caption id="attachment_8028" align="alignright"]Forget the old ways of capturing interviews.[/caption]I never went to “J” school (in case you couldn’t tell), so I missed the class on how to conduct a proper interview. As a result I’ve had to make it up as I go along, which is another way of saying I rarely do it the same each time.

I usually carry one of those big, skinny notepads, the kind they give out at writer events (I’m sure there’s a name for them). Unfortunately, I never took short-hand (do they even teach that anymore?), I can’t write very fast and I can never read what I’ve written when I go back to my notes.

I tried one of those portable micro-cassette recorders for a while, then switched to a digital one when they came alone. The problem there was, I use it so infrequently that by the time I needed it, the batteries were dead. I even bought the software that supposedly converts digital audio to text files, but it was too complicated to figure out. (Anyone interested in purchasing a small digital recorder and some software?).

I sometimes bring my lap-top along to hunting camp, but that usually ends up being more of a hassle than it’s worth. It’s just one extra bag to go through security and lug around the airports. When I bring it, I usually don’t have the time or need to use it. When I do have time, there’s no way to recharge the battery, which lasts far less than was advertised.

Inspiration hit me on a recent bowhunt in Illinois. We hunted mornings and afternoons, and during the mid-day breaks were treated (subjected) to sponsor product seminars. I was about to grab my long, skinny notebook when I noticed the black, glasses case lying amongst my hunting gear. That’s when the light went on.

The case contained a set of Hunter’s Specialties i-KAM XTREME eyewear. The size and weight of a pair of conventional sunglasses, the i-Kam also contains video and audio recording technology. Slip them on, press a button and whatever you see and hear - including sponsor product seminars and interviews - gets digitally recorded. Download to your lap-top or desktop when it’s convenient; then you can review at your leisure with any of the standard viewing software. It’s like having a live presentation, but you can pause and rewind as needed. I still carry the long, skinny notebook, and jot notes as a reference, but the i-KAM is now my mainstay for conducting the perfect interview.
