Photographers, both new and experienced, often find themselves struggling with focus modes. It's relatively safe to say that leaving your camera in auto-focus mode isn't the optimal choice for every photo you take. Although sometimes auto-focus works out well, getting super sharp images means choosing the right focus mode. There are several guidelines that you can follow to make the right choice, every time.

The three key focus modes
Most cameras are equipped with three key
focus modes:
AF-S, also known as One Shot.
AF-C, also known as Continuous, also known as AI Servo.
Manual (sometimes abbreviated as
M).
Note that some cameras include an additional focus mode, known as AI Focus, also known as AF-A. But it’s a mode that I never use, and I certainly don’t recommend to others (it’s frequently finicky, and not very effective).
