The trade show season is soon upon us. Whether you're an old pro or it's your first time attending, a little preparation can go a long way to having a fun and productive show. Kurt Weber, the ATA's director of marketing, gives some great advice on lessons he's learned from attending many shows.

guestcolumnfeetKurt Weber, the ATA's director of marketing, has attended and worked at trade shows nearly 30 years as a seller, exhibitor and buyer. At our request, Weber wrote his list of most valuable trade-show lessons. Here are some highlights:

  1. Fashion should not be your passion. Dress in comfortable clothes; especially your shoes. I am now in the habit of buying Dr. Scholes inserts to help pad my feet and always pack my "fat pants." Holding in your stomach all day is a big time distraction.
  2. A traveling medicine cabinet is not a vice. Over the years, I have fallen prey to nearly every ailment you can think of while attending trade shows. Now I carry an ample supply of headache, pain, heartburn and cold medicine.
  3. Hannibal did not rush to cross the Alps. When traveling, make sure you allow more time than you think you need. Whether you're driving to the airport or driving to the Show, the added stress of being late or the unexpected snow or sleet will not put you in the right frame of mind when you arrive.
  4. If only we could open a lemonade stand in the desert. If you are an exhibitor, avoid assuming everyone coming to the show is there to see the latest and greatest product you have produced. YOU need to make the first move. Smile and engage folks as they walk past your booth. Prepare a 15 second pitch to get them to think about your product. You only have their attention for a very short time, so use that time well.
