Member Spotlight – Q & A with Serena Juchnowski:

  • Tell us about your upbringing. What skills did you acquire throughout childhood and/or young adulthood that helped lead you towards your career as a content developer?

I am very fortunate to have amazing parents who have supported me in whatever I’ve wanted to do. I always enjoyed taking photographs and writing from a young age, but never thought I could turn it into a career (My mom said when I was very little, I carried books instead of stuffed animals around the house.) My parents are also both creative, hard-working people so I have taken after them in my own space. We’d always joke that we never do anything the easy or simple way, we always go above and beyond in everything we do. That has certainly helped me. My family has also always spent lots of time outdoors.

  • In your opinion, what is happening in the hunting/fishing/outdoor industry today that’s exciting for our future?

I am excited to see so many new gun owners joining the fold. It is a great opportunity to educate people about firearms and grow the shooting sports.

  • What do you enjoy writing about/developing content for the most?

I enjoy writing about competition and shooting sports the most. I fell into the niche by accident and like being able to offer advice that can help others improve and share stories that can inspire. I also have enjoyed doing more traditional firearms reviews and writing in my role as digital editor at FMG Publications.

  • What platforms or channels do you use to share content? Which do you find the most valuable? The least valuable? And why?

On a personal level I share content both by sending direct links but also by posting on social media. I haven’t found something I’m truly happy with for sharing articles in particular. I share photos on Instagram, but even when using a link-in-bio, the click through rate is incredibly small for articles. I am in the process of revitalizing my personal website. Stay tuned!

  • Have you had any mentorship and if so, anyone specifically you’d like to share that has been influential for you?

I would not be in the outdoor industry if it were not for John “Bubba” Phillips. John is a founding member of POMA and has been critical to my current success in the industry. We met by chance — he was interviewing a pro-staffer who was assigned to guide me on a scholarship hunt through NWTF. John needed my permission to use a photo of me, I asked what in the world an outdoor writer was, and before I knew it, I had a list of tasks written out with six months to complete them. I followed all of his instructions and kept in touch over the phone. I started working with John in May 2017, sold my first article in 2018, and met him in person for the first time at SHOT Show 2019.

John has also introduced me to many people who have been very influential in my writing career thus far. He has taught me the importance of mentorship and I am passing it on, just as J. Wayne Fears mentored John and John mentored me. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Stephanie Mallory, Kevin Paulson and George Harris.

  • What tools/apps/other do you use for getting content out that you would recommend?

Having a website and a place you have full control of your content is key. Building a brand through social media is also very important.

  • Do you find conferences and events to be valuable? Why or why not?

100%. Networking at conferences and events (depending upon what they are of course) is second to none. It is a great way to meet a lot of people in one place and to make both great connections and friendships.

  • Tell us a couple of fun facts! – What have you been told is your superpower? – What’s something remarkable you’ve done/experienced?

What most people recognize me for is competitive rifle shooting. I’m distinguished in High Power Service Rifle and a member of the U.S. Young Eagles Palma team. I have also started competing in smallbore silhouette. I really enjoy coaching and helping other people learn marksmanship.
