ATHENS, GA (May 11, 2018) – For the second consecutive year, the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) achieved a coveted four-star rating from Charity Navigator, the nation’s largest independent evaluator of the financial health, accountability and transparency of charities. QDMA’s overall Charity Navigator score increased to 91.16, one of the highest current ratings among comparable wildlife conservation non-profits in America.
“Only 30 percent of the charities we evaluate have received at least two consecutive four-star evaluations, indicating QDMA outperforms most other charities in America,” wrote Michael Thatcher, President and CEO of Charity Navigator, in a letter to QDMA CEO Brian Murphy. “This exceptional designation from Charity Navigator sets QDMA apart from its peers and demonstrates to the public its trustworthiness.”
QDMA achieved a score of 87.5 on “financial considerations,” such as the fact that 86.4 percent of the organization’s total expenses are spent on mission delivery and member services – improved from 85.7 percent last year – while administrative and fundraising expenses are in the single digits. On the “accountability and transparency” side, QDMA’s score increased from 93 last year to a perfect rating of 100, giving an overall score of 91.16, which is in the 4-star ring.
“QDMA members can take pride in supporting one of the leanest, most transparent and most effective wildlife conservation organizations in the United States,” said QDMA’s CEO Brian Murphy. “Charity Navigator’s independent evaluation shows we maximize the resources we dedicate to our mission of ensuring the future of white-tailed deer, wildlife habitat and our hunting heritage.”
Since 2002, using objective analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a 4-star rating. In 2011, Charity Navigator added 17 metrics, focused on governance and ethical practices as well as measures of openness, to its ratings methodology. These Accountability & Transparency metrics, which account for 50 percent of a charity’s overall rating, reveal which charities operate in accordance with industry best practices and whether they are open with their donors and stakeholders.
